Its time to take heed and admit to our faults and turn back to Allah. We've all heard this before, 'forgive and forget' it's become clichéd, and hard to apply. Apologising in some people's eyes can be the easiest of tasks or the hardest in some cases. It takes sheer guts and determination to be the bigger person in a situation to say you're in the wrong and admit you're sorry. Haste is from the devil, so take your time before you say or do something you will later regret.
Istighfar, forgiveness is a vital remedy that all Muslims must adhere to, we must always be in a state of forgiveness, seeking refuge because without realising it but we may have committed a sin. Good things happen to good and bad people, though we shouldn't feel 'why has Allah afflicted me for..' it's not like we ask the same question when we have happiness in our life.
We should try and avoid any uncalled for behaviour, by staying in good company, speaking the truth, and trying our best to stick to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
"...Beware, in the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart."
- Bukhari
SubhanAllah (Praise be to God), knowing that committing a sin be it small or big, a black spot will appear on our heart. But if you sincerely seek forgiveness and repent by the will of Allah your heart will be cleansed, but if you repeat it, (the blackness) will increase until it overwhelms your heart; thus it will be harder to turn back to Allah. Say "A'udhobillahi Minash-Shaytan Ar-Rajeem", "I seek refuge from the accursed Satan".
The People asked the Prophet (Peace be upon Him), "How can their [hearts] be cleaned." The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied, "To remember death in abundance and to recite the Holy Quran." (Mishkat)
We can take inspiration from this beautiful example by the boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, who once said, "I don't smoke but I keep a match box in my pocket, when my heart slips towards SIN, I burn the matchstick & heat my palm with it, than say to myself, "Ali you can't even bear this heat, how would you bear the unbearable heat of hellfire?" subhanAllah.
It is Allah who gives health, sickness, wealth and poverty. It is Allah we should turn to, the moment you feel an ounce of doubt seek Allah's help and guidance.
When you feel like you're getting angry, or heated up quickly go and perform Wudu as water extinguishes fire (as Satan is made of fire), then sit down, if that doesn't help lie down. Follow the acts of Sunnah when you're angry. Don't allow yourself to get angry over such trivial matters.
"When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down."
- Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi
Remind yourself constantly there are people out there who are in far worse situations than you, So when you come home from having a 'bad day' just think that our pious predecessors have been through the mill and back, what we face nowadays is nothing in comparison.
'Guaranteed is a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.'
- Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 4782.
Tests and tribulations are placed upon us to make us stronger not weaker. We are tested in so many ways, and face many difficult personalities in our lives.
Ibn Taymiyah said: 'A calamity that makes you turn to Allah is better for you than a blessing which makes you forget the remembrance of Allah.'
Turn to Allah before you return to Him.
